The evolution of floral prints in Fashion

Have you ever wondered how floral prints made their way into fashion? Here’s an interesting timeline!

Flowers have always been a symbol of beauty and femininity. We can never get tired of gazing at breathtakingly beautiful blossoms of all colors in springtime. And if you have ever wondered how floral prints made their way into fashion, here’s an interesting timeline!

They first started in Asia

One of the first popular floral patterns printed on silk was the peonies print, which is a very famous Chinese flower. These printed silk fabrics transported from the Orient were very expensive and were only afforded by the rich in Europe.

Floral lace in the Middle Ages

People back then were looking for ways to get rid of harsh plain fabrics, such as linen. This gave way to the venetian laces with floral prints. They were worn by both men and women in all parts of Europe.

Persian influence in the 17th century

The 17th century saw the emergence of ornate textiles in Persian. Woven velvet clothes embellished with tulips and pomegranates took over the Fashion seen back then. They were brought to Italy by the Ottoman Empire merchants.

The 18th century

The fashion scene witnessed a booming in floral patterns during that time. Between the multicolored block printed flowery patterns known as the Indian Chintz and the silk brocade daisies, roses and carnations sewn on silk, it was clear that this trend was people’s favorite.

The Victorian Era

The Victorian Era saw the rise of the sunflower pattern, not only in fashion but also in art. It symbolizes adoration, loyalty and longevity. In different cultures it could also mean positivity, strength and admiration.

Floral prints today

Floral prints are now being incorporated not only into apparel, but also accessories, footwear, bags and pretty much anything that falls under the fashion umbrella. Designers are continuously inspired by the beauty and uniqueness of flowers.

This brings us to the evident conclusion: floral prints will forever be a timeless trend that will keep on evolving, reflecting inner beauty and always making a statement!
